Outstanding Leadership
Have you ever considered what it takes to inspire a team, days from returning home from 6 months in Afghanistan, to walk into a known ambush in order to find and render safe a remote controlled anti-vehicle bomb? Or how a 20 year old officer leads a Troop of 30 seasoned soldiers to war?
Far from being the archaic and authoritarian organisation that is the traditional military stereotype; the modern British Army is an an ever evolving culture focused around the power of intent, critical thinking and developing the individual. It engenders visionary leaders who empower and inspire others to do incredible things anyone would be sensible to avoid.
For over a decade and a half I studied, practiced, experienced and lived leadership. I learnt from the successes and mistakes of others and learned even more from my own. Outstanding Leadership is the honest account of leadership in organisations as large as the British Army and as small as a Special Forces team. It focuses on what it takes to be a leader how to prepare, the conduct and how to cope in order to serve those who follow.
Extreme Decisions
There’s no option of walking away from a hostage strapped to an explosive device, no time to hesitate and no-one else to do it for you. No bombproof suit will save you from the full force of an anti-vehicle IED when you’re kneeling next to it and make a mistake. How do you get it right under such immense pressure? How do you decide to “cut a wire” rather than run away? And in the quiet of the night, how do you cope with the possibility of getting it wrong tomorrow?
There is a very real difference between a choice and a decision and if there’s one skill that will set you apart from the mediocrity it’s the ability to make a decision and understand why. Critical decision making is so much more than choosing between options. It has more benefit than you could possibly imagine yet it’s incredible how many talented individuals are paralysed by the prospect of making a decision.
“Extreme Decisions” is a story of self realisation and unlocking potential. Handling Risk
A select few choose to walk toward the bomb rather than run away.
For so many people risk is something to be avoided but when you open yourself to risk you’ll be amazed at the incredible things you can achieve. Whether it’s defusing a terrorist bomb, traveling across glacial crevasses, skiing in avalanche country or high consequence business, risk is unavoidable. To avoid it is to remain stagnant but managing risk, that’s success.
Defusing a bomb is, at it’s most simple, a process of understanding, prioritising and balancing risks but when the reward is to do it all again tomorrow and the consequences are at best death and at worst unimaginable, nothing is as simple as risk vs reward. “Handling Risk” follows the mental processes, attitudes and techniques employed by Bomb Disposal experts and Special Forces personnel that changes how they view, assess and respond to risk. It looks at the human effect and how they cope and are able to perform in such high consequence situations.
There’s no advocating the taking of unnecessary risk or reckless heroism. There are always benefits and dangers of any risk you face. But when we’re done you’ll never look at a risk the same way again.
Critical Thinking
A wicked problem is one with no solution. Think global warming or famine in Africa. Complex problems however, no matter how difficult, can be solved and complex problems are the domain of the Special Forces Bomb Disposal Operator.
Surely we all admire the extreme rational logic of Sherlock Holmes but what does it really take to think your way around the traps and triggers of an unbeatable terrorist bomb? A problem that seems obviously mechanical and yet is as intrinsically human as a game of chess.
Every thought you have and decision you make is influenced by your experience and biases. “Critical thinking” takes you into a wold of “why?” and “so what?”. It challenges every belief and assumption it simplifies the complex and orders the chaotic. Critical thinking is what allows ordinary people to develop extraordinary solutions to complex problems and we can show you how.
